34 days!!!

That's how far away we are from the walk, just under five weeks. Crazy how much time has gone by. Tomorrow is the 8 month anniversary of starting the couch to 5k program!

I passed the 40lb mark yesterday!!!! Tomorrow is my official weigh in, I hope it's still good. It's sometimes up a bit the day after a long walk.

So workouts...

9/27 - a very slow 4 miles, ~55 minutes
9/28 - rest
9/29 - 10 miles, 2 laps around Tempe Town Lake

So Thursday I did my run in the evening and it was a bit of a struggle. The food I'd eaten 4 hours earlier wasn't sitting well. That and I had M in the jogging stroller. I was WAY slower then usual but I ran for much longer intervals. I walked my first 1/4 mile as warm up, started my watch and started to run. I ran for 10 minutes and then walked for 1, ran 10 more and walked 2, ran 10, walked 2, ran 10 and then walked the last 1/4 mile or so home. My time was way slow considering all the running but it was harder pushing the stroller. I'm going to go for longer run intervals on Tuesday morning when I'm out alone.

It was amazing to be somewhere different tonight. What a nice change of view.

There was a "Splash & Dash" going on there too. That looks like something I'll have to try once before my Tri in may. It's just a swim and a run, love that idea!!

School intersession

We have this week and next week off from work, what a good time to do more then just post workouts!!

I don't think I mentioned it the other day, but at my last weigh in I was down a total of 39lbs from January. Pretty amazing! I feel darned good about it, but there's still a really long way to go.

Sunday (the 23rd) was the traithlon that we volunteered at. What an awesome experience. OMG, those people are incredible. I left my station when I thought all runners were done and had about a mile walk back to the rest of my group. A biker was coming up behind me so I asked if he saw anybody else w/ numbers and he said yeah, just one, so I went back and walked/ran w/ the coolest lady! She had to be in her 60's and this was her first Olympic distance tri. (swim 1 mile, bike 24, run 6) She was telling me about the Tri for Cure she did last May and how amazing it was. As w/ many "For the Cure" events, it isn't really about winning so the swimmers could use float boards and swim fins. If you can't swim it there were designated swimmers who could swim your leg for you! Oh, and it's an all woman event. She said it was SO moving. I am totally there this year!

I found all the info on the '08 event and right now it's not being associated w/ Susan G. Komen for the Cure, but I'm hoping it will. Either way, I'm doing it.

I started swimming as crosstraining this week. Erika has a bike she's going to lend me. I should be set. I'll be 35 at the time of the event and my goal is to finish in the top 20 for my age group. Ok, that might be a little lofty based on the results from last year, but I have EIGHT months to get ready. I could feasably be down 40 more pounds by then!

Of course, my husband doesn't think I can do it..... not sure if he doesn't know me or what, but those became fightin' words and I took it as a challenge. Not only will I do it, I will sign up on the competitve roster so I CAN'T use any sort of swim aids.

Anyhow, workouts for the week.

9/24 - swimming laps, 45 minutes
9/25 - 4 miles, 48:? (Can't remember my time exactly)
9/26 - swimming laps, 45 minutes

Changing gears again?

I've not been the best updater, but that doesn't mean I'm not training!

Right after my last post I found out about a 1/2 marathon in Flagstaff in August. I decided that really wanted to do it and I knew I'd be doing more walking then running, but I wanted to try.

I cut way back on my mileage the last few weekends but was doing intervals of 3 min. walking and 2 min. running and it was going really well! This weekend though I think we decided not to do the 1/2. I just can't figure out the logistics. I can't really afford a hotel and camping leaves the risk of not getting enough rest or getting up and ready on time. I just don't know.

I think tomorrow I'm going to just do a long walk, maybe 15 miles.

Busy month!!!

Wow, June has been SO busy!

My longest walk to date was a week ago. I did 13.1 miles. I was supposed to out yesterday for 14 but I way overtrained w/ a workout and sprints on Friday. My legs were killing me. I'm going to go for a long bike ride tonight and then I'll do a normal run/walk tomorrow.

Oh, I bought a bike. Just a cheapie Walmart one but I got a softer seat and a helmet. It's a good cross training alterative. YAY!!!

I also registered for the Surf City USA half marathon on Feb. 3. It's in Huntington Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway. I can't wait!!!

Off schedule

The 3 day weekend threw me off some!

I didn't get my long walk in until Monday. Bruno and I did 11.2 miles!!! The weather wasn't too bad but Bruno was pretty wore out by the time we got home.

I ended up running all over yesterday with errands and such so no workout. This morning I went to the Y and did 3.28 miles in 45 minutes. I even ran at 6mph for my first interval!!!! Woohoo!!

I plan to run on Friday morning and hopefully get something in tomorrow. Maybe Abs class tomorrow night.

We leave Friday afternoon for our vacation. I was thrilled to find out I can use the Y near my dh's house while we're gone!!

Let's get it started!

No more excuses, I'm officially on SUMMER!!!!!!! I have to go in and clean out my office next week but the boys will be in Cali w/ my IL's so it's no biggie.

It's time to kick the training up. I want to run 3x/wk, cross train 2x/wk and do my long walks on the weekend. I CAN do this! There is no reason to not buckle down and get to it.

I got my 2 run/walks in this week and my pace is increasing. I did 3.23 miles in 45 minutes on Tuesday and 2.45 miles in 35 miles on Thursday. I'm changing up the run/walk intervals and making them longer.

Tonight I gave my iPod and overhaul and created a playlist called 'runnin' that's full of songs w/ a great pace.

10 miles!!

Wooohooo! I finally hit the 10 mile mark! I had to do it on the treadmill in the living room but at least it was cool and I got to watch two movies!!!!

I missed my second short run/walk last week and still haven't managed to get any cross training in.

The start of a plan...

Well, it occurred to me yesterday that we have a HUGE mall out here. It's a single story and if I remember correctly, one lap around is one mile. I think that I could go there on Sundays and just walk around it all day. I'll have to figure out a way to keep track of my laps.

I didn't do anything exercise yesterday! I have GOT to get better about that. Not sure what my issue is. I'm hoping it's the stress/time issues w/ the end of the year. Next Thurs. is my last day and then it should get better.

I did get to the Y tonight. I did 3.1 miles in my 45 minutes. I love getting a good sweat on, the front of my shirt was all wet. Never thought I'd ever say that. :-)

Oh, my weigh in over the weekend, down 23.8!!!!

It's HOT!!!

I'm suddenly very nervous over training in the summer.

Bruno and I went out on Sunday morning and walked for 3 hours. I thought we did 9 miles but when I clocked it this morning it was closer to 8. We left at 6am and were home by 9. It was already really hot by 8. How am I going to do 20 miles, which I expect to take 8 hours, in AUGUST??? I mean, it'll be mid-90's at 4am. There's no way I can do that kind of walking in the 110 degree heat of the sun. I don't think leaving at 10 and walking all night is a safe option. I just don't know.

Tonight I have to do some yoga, or at least some ab work. I really need to start getting my noncardio and crosstraining in on a more regular basis.

Friday, May 11, 2007

So far so good!

I did run/walk intervals again yesterday! I covered 3.11 miles in 45 minutes. My one complete mile of run/walking was done in under 14 minutes!!!!!

Tonight I need to do yoga. I have to start adding cross training to my weeks. I know, I've been saying that for months.

They Y's current class schedule has a 9am cardio/step class for 55 minutes and then a 10am abs class. My goal is to be there for that on Mon. and Wed. all summer. I *may*opt to skip the cardio class and just do abs since it's the day right after my long walk.

Running again

I went to the Y yesterday for my walk and decided it was time to start running again. I did a 6 minute warm up and then did 90 second run/walk intervals. That got to be a bit much and did 60 second run/walk intervals and then near the end I ran 60 and walked 90. I did that for 30 minutes and then did 5 minutes of walking and 4 miles of cool down. I did 3.02 miles in 45 minues.

I found a training plan to prepare for a 1/2 marathon, which I'm going to do in Vegas on Dec. 2. I start that the second week of August. Between now and then I'm going to work up to a 20 mile walk. I'd love to post it, I just can't figure out how too!

What I see vs. what is real

Well, I'm feeling bummed. A neighbor just brought by some pictures from Easter. I look PREGNANT in them.

I've lost 22lbs and in my head, I'm looking pretty darned good. In reality, I still need to lose 67 more lbs just to get my BMI into the normal range..... so while I look slightly better...... I am far from HOT. :(

Anyway, aside from that, I did walk 9 miles yesterday!!! I took my dog Bruno. He did great but after a while I swear he was looking at me thinking, "Seriously.... we aren't home YET!?!?!?" LOL!

Spoke too soon!!!

Ugh! For as well as last week was, the past few days have been ROUGH. It's getting to be CRAZY at work, busy busy and lots of stress. Stress for me means eating, and being so busy that getting my exercise is a challenge.

I've kept my portions ok, but my choices have been less then stellar. I've only exercised twice this week and I have to work all day tomorrow. I do have 9 miles scheduled for Sunday though.

I need to snap out of this rut SOON.

Summer is coming. I'm not sure what to anticipate from that. I have plans to be very motivated. I just have to make sure my lazy and snack craving side doesn't get the best of me. I am hoping to be up and going at a decent time in the morning. I'd like to get to the Y early. If I exercise early then I do better w/ food during the day.

Busy losing weight!!

It's that time of year at work, we're so busy there just aren't enough hours. It tends to carry over to my home life and every other aspect so my journaling is suffering some.

Friday night I took the boys out on their bikes to the big long green belt. I'm not sure but I think it's at least 1/2 mile long, maybe longer. We walked that several times and were out for about an hour. I'm pretty sure I covered at least 3 miles in that time. Not my usual pace but not bad for having the boys with me.

I was supposed to do a long, 9 mile, walk this weekend but it just didn't happen. I'm calling it my rest weekend and told my dh that it has to happen this Sunday come he!! or high water.

Monday I got to the Y and did 2.6 miles on the treadmill but got dizzy near the end. This was the first time I'd tried reading while on their and I'm not sure if that was why.

The biggest thing is that the weight seems to be falling off me right now. I'm not really trying. I mean, I do watch my fat from calories and watch my water intake, but that's really it. I've lost 4.6lbs in the last 16 days! My total as of this morning is 22.4!!!!!!! I can totally see and feel it and so can everybody around me. My mom told me last night she thinks it looks like more than that, probably because of all the exercise I'm getting this time around. Gotta love that!

So far behind!

Ugh, more craziness! Actually, I don't expect that to end until May 24 when school gets out.

I can't even remember last week. I would assume I went to the Y on Monday but I just don't know. Tuesday was my sister's bday so I missed my workout. Wednesday I had a ton to do around the house so I just took a quick 20 minute walk around the neighborhood.

Thursday we headed out to PIR for NASCAR weekend. We did a TON of walking there. We did about 2-3 miles Thurs. night too and from the track. Friday I got up and went for a walk and then did a bunch of walking to and around the track. Saturday there was no exercise walking but definitely some around the track. I got a pedometer and did about 15,000 steps on Friday and well over 10,000 on Saturday!

I was just drained Sun/Mon/Tues but today I got to the Y and did 2.3 miles in 40 minutes. I just wasn't feeling it, it felt like WORK. That was new for me. I hope it was just a fluke.

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Crazy week!

Monday I got to the Y and did 2.5 miles on the treadmill. Tuesday I was supposed to come home, feed the boys and then go for class. Instead, my boxer had started having her puppies so I was busy doing that all evening. Wednesday I came home and checked on them and got tired. Thursday I had to go to a job fair to recruit. I NEEDED to get to the Y on Friday but the pups had a vet apt. and I just didn't make it. I still can't believe I didn't get there again all week. I have to do better this week.

I did regain some ground this morning. I got up and walked about 7.7 miles!!! Not to shabby! I was hoping to hit 8 but just missed it when I went back and clocked it. Oh well, next time!

Monday, April 9, 2007

Wow!

I have walked/run 87 miles since Jan. 30th!!! That is a long way! That also doesn't include some lunchtime walks to Subway and stuff.

I've also lost 17.4lbs. I figure if I can average 1.5lbs each week, I'll be at my goal in about 1 year.

Pat's Run

Today was Pat's Run for the Pat Tillman foundation. It was 4.2 miles (he wore number 42) and started in the parking outside ASU's football stadium and ended on the 42 yard line inside. Before I get to details, I knew going in I was walking this. It's been a rough week w/ a sore throat and chest from a massive cough. I'm sure it's allergy related but I can't get it under control. In addition, I've decided to focus more heavily on walking for a while so I know I keep my heartrate in an aerobic zone. I need to get more of this weight off before I'm an effective runner.

Anyhow, my goal for today was to run a little bit, if so inclined, but to be a fast walker. I didn't realize how many people would be there. I mean, I saw the pics on the site (http://www.patsrun.com/) but just didn't process it. Traffic getting in was a mess and it took a while to get off the freeway and find a parking spot. My round trip walk to/from the car was a good mile so I counted that as the warm up/cool down period. I finally got where I needed to be, had just enough time to potty, stretch and then line up behind THOUSANDS of people. It was truly amazing how many people were there - every age and ability level. The race was time chipped, good thing because it took 8 minutes before I crossed the start line and there were still A LOT of people behind me. I ran just a bit at the beginning hoping to get spread out some and quickly realized that wasn't going to happen so then I just picked a solid walking pace and took off.

The course wound up behind ASU, over the bridge across Tempe Town Lake, up and down a hill (not too major) and up another road back across the bridge, onto ASU campus and then on to the football field. I walked 99% of it, running usually only when I needed to get around some walkers but didn't want to be slow if any runners came up trying to pass too. If I picked it up to a run, I'd keep it going for a little bit. I was alone today so I had music. I did visit a bit w/ a few people around me but I found that I was passing most walkers and being passed by runners, but not too many around me keeping the pace I was. I saw and briefly chatted w/ a gal who did the 5k in Laughlin last week, that was pretty cool. The COOLEST thing I saw was a gal pushing a stroller. The sign on the stroller said, "My middle name is Tillman". I told her I thought that was incredible and she indicated to another lady w/ a stroller she'd just been talking to and said her baby's name was Tillman too. I was barely crossing the bridge when people were coming back our way who had finished and were looking for people they knew...... showoffs! ;-)

Anyway, as I got closer to the stadium, I picked it up some. I had every intention of running as fast as I could but the finish line was almost overwhelming. The ASU football players were all there, in uniform, high fiving us as we headed in. The jumbo tron was showing people coming in (didn't realize 'til I was in) and it was just amazing. I know I don't have much point of reference, but this event just touched me. It was so incredible I don't know how to do it justice. Beyond that, it was amazingly well run! There were water/poweraid stations every mile and even near back of the pack, they were plenty stocked. Lines of people keeping you moving, plenty of waterbottles, even for stragglers, as they got near the finish. Well marked with lots of volunteers and peole on bikes keeping an eye on participants. I know I'm forgetting stuff..... just like I forgot to bring a camera. I don't know what my official time was but I'm guessing about 1:05ish.

Ok, since I wrote that they posted times. My time was 1:01:45!!!!!

There were 9461 finishers!!!!!

New workouts

It was a busy week for us. I didn't do anything on Sunday or Monday.

Tuesday I went to the Y and walked 2.5 miles on the treadmill. Just as I came out of the weight room, they had started the circuit training class I've been wanting to take. It's a lot like curves w/ machines and cardio stations alternated and it's an hour long. I figured I could handle it 'cuz the cardio stations are only 30 seconds to a minute. WELL...... about 6 stations in he sends us into the other gym/dance room and we spend 10 minutes doing lunges, sprints, squats, high knees, butt kicks....... OMG, thought I was going to DIE. We then went back out the machines for a while but went back in there for another 10 minutes at the end of class. A grand totaly of 1 hour and 40 minutes of exercise, mostly cardio!

Wednesday I did some yard work and then walked to the park while the boys rode their bikes. I walked laps around the green belt while they played. I got a totaly of about 40 minutes walking in.

Thursday I went for the 60 minutes of cirquit training and stayed for the 30 minute abs class. YOW!!!

Friday was busy so no exercise again. I did get to ASU to pick up my race packet for Pat's Run.

My first 5K!

I'm really behind! Ok, here's the run report from last Saturday.

The night before I made a very pitiful attempt at getting a good night's sleep. I had started getting a headcold on Thurs., we were sleeping on a blow up mattress and we had a very fitful 3 year old sleeping between us. It was a LONG night. I got up at one point, figuring it HAD to be 6 already...... it was 3:30. Not good. I finally heard S up and about and got up at 6. We were out the door by about 6:45 and I was feeling ok.I hadn't been very good with water all week so I drank a bottle on the way there and another once we got to the start line. I peed 3 times before the race started. The 1/2 milers got started and then I spent about 10 minutes walking around and stretching before they lined us up. Although I had done a TON of walking the last 2 weeks, I had only run once in the last 3 weeks and that was 10 days ago and I did 6R/3W intervals. I started strong and though I had no watch and just my iPod shuffle, I paced myself with songs, running 2 and walking 1. In my second run interval my cold gave me a big F-U and I had to cut back some. I was coughing up all sorts of yuck but I hung in there pretty well. Keep in mind 99% of my runs have taken place on the treadmill so all the rocks were a challenge for me. I'm not very graceful anyway so I had to be extra careful. The water was very pretty but I couldn't look anywhere but a few feet in front of me or I would have fallen or twisted something for sure.I got to the 1 water stop we got and all they were offering was gatoraide. I never ever drink that but I took some and that was a bad idea. It gave me a horrible belly ache that just churned every time I ran. Anyway, I did pretty even run/walk intervals the second half. I nearly spit on somebody passing me because my music was loud and I didn't here them coming up. I got near the end and picked up my pace to as close as this big butt gets to a sprint for crossing the finish line. Being the big dork that I am, I was so glad I had my glasses on because I was totally tearing up. My time was 44:01, not quite as fast as I would have liked, but given my chest and congestion, pretty darned good. Most importantly, I didn't finish last. That is ALL that I cared about.

Major update!!!

Wow, I'm really behind! It's been a crazy 9 days.

Last week I tried to go the Y on Saturday but got there late so I buzzed through a very quick 22 minute 1.5 miles before the childcare center closed.

Sunday A took the boys to the movie so I went out. I planned to run but I was still having leg issues so I walked..... and walked.... and walked..... for a total of 6.7 miles!!!!! WOOOHOOO!!!! The most incredible part.... totally didn't feel like a big deal. I did have some stiff legs the next day though.

Monday we headed out of town. Tuesday morning I did 30 minutes of intervals on a treadmill, Tuesday night we walked about 2 miles in Vegas. Wednesday and Thursday were FULL of walking, like 2.5+ miles EACH WAY to get to where we went both days.

This morning we did a little bit of walking but not nearly so much. This afternoon we drove down to Laughlin to meet my friend Shelley at the expo for the Laughlin 1/2 Marathon that she's running in the morning. I got bit by a bug and ended up registering for the 5k! My first official run is in the morning!!!

Better get ready for bed, we have to be out of here early tomorrow.

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Finally!

I got a decent workout! Of course, I'll probably be paying for it with my feet and leg later.

We were late getting to the Y but I was feeling pretty good and decided to just go for it. I decided that after my 5 minute warm up I wanted to cover the timer and distance and just RUN until I didn't feel like I could anymore. I made it 6 minutes and 1/2 a mile! Then I walked for 3 and did it again. All in all I did 3 sets of 6 min run and 3 min walk. WOOOHOOO! Then I went to the cirquit area. I did some arm, ab and back work before I got kicked out for a teen class.

I've decided to do the cirquit class once or twice a week to help with core strengthening.

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Gah!!!!

This whole foot thing is SO frustrating. It needs to get better, NOW!

Sunday we went to the Y and swam. I left the boys with A and did laps for about 20 minutes. The boys and I went back today and I planned to swim. They were having swim team practice so that was out. Then I decided to try walking but stopped after 15 minutes. I then did 15 minutes on the bike and decided to do some weights for core strengthening. I got 2 into it when they came to start a class in that area! The class is an hour and I didn't want to be that much longer so I threw in the towel and headed home. We'll go back tomorrow, hopefully it will be more successful!

Ouch!!!

I got set to go for my run yesterday and started with my warm up. That part felt ok but as soon as I started to run I had pain in my foot and shin. Guess it was still too agitated. I did walk about 2.5 miles.

This week I'll do my cardio on the bike to avoid any more strain and hopefully next week will be good.

Tired!

Tuesday we went right from work to my mom's and didn't get home until just after 8. I got the boys bathed and asleep before 8:45 and I was OUT by 9. I slept a solid 8 hours and was up at 5. I did 30 minutes of Yoga and then got ready for the day. After work I went to the Y and did 45 minutes on the treadmill. Talk about an active day!!!! I was just beat by the time I got home and got dinner ready.

Speaking of dinner, it was SO yummy! I read a recipe for low fat chimichangas and decided to give it a try. I had cooked chicken breasts in the crockpot w/ tomato and green chilis on Sunday. I added some cumin and chili powder too. I shredded it all up and stuck in the fridge that night. Last night I heated it up a bit, warmed up some 98% fat free tortillas and put a mixture of fat free and 2% shredded cheese in them with the chicken. I wrapped them like a burrito and put them in a glass pan (sprayed w/ cooking spray). I baked them for just shy of 25 minutes at 450, pulled them out and sprinkled more cheese on top and stuck them back in for just another minute. I covered mine with fat free sour cream. OMG, just delicious!!!! Even A liked them!

The Plan...

First, yesterday. I managed to hit the Y and get in 45 minutes (2.5 miles). I did all my normal stuff pace and stretching wise, but something has REALLY aggravated my foot! Not good. I'm supposed to walk 30 minutes and do some yoga today but I may skip the walk.

I spent a lot of time the last few days mapping out my training schedule for the next 38 weeks. HOLY CRAP! It's amazing to see every week layed out like that. Basically it's 1-2 days/wk of walking or run/walking, 1 day of a shorter walk and yoga and one day of just yoga. Monday - Friday. Then my weekends have long run/walks or longer walks in there. They incriments keep going up and up until I get into late Sept/Oct. when I'll have two different weekends w/ two long walks back to back!

I actually only have 34 weeks, including this week, until the 3 day. The last 4 weeks are preparation for the Las Vegas Marathon. I have decided I'm doing the full. I can do it, I know I can!

Inches!!

I can't believe I forgot to mention my measurements!!!

I took them yesterday and in the last 4 weeks I've lost 3 from my belly, 2.5 from my waist, 2 from my hips and 1 from my thigh. YIPPEE!!!!! :D

I didn't do arms or chest at all.

Great weekend!!!

Yesterday was awesome!!! First, I was down another .8 for a total of 12 even.

Next, I was feeling good headed to the Y. I decided I wanted to do 5 miles and I wanted to do as much as possible in walk 3/run 2 intervals.

I did 4 minutes of walking, gradually increasing my pace, and then started 3/2's. I hit 3 miles exactly as the time her 45 minutes and I actually clapped for myself ...... on the treadmill...... at the Y. (Yes, I'm a dork.) I was really feeling pretty good and totally in a groove so I kept going. Before yesterday, I hadn't ever done run intervals for more then about 2 miles. Just as I was supposed to run at about 47 minutes in, my towel got hung up on the emergency cord and stopped the treadmill so I scrambled to get it to my running pace. I hit another mile in just under 15 minutes. I did a little walking dance and was grinning like an idiot. I was still feeling pretty good and my heart rate was still where I wanted it to be. I kept going. I did the intervals until I hit my second mile on that go and started a cool down walk. Overall I did just over 5.25 miles in 1 hour 19 minutes!!!!!!! I was so freaking excited! I actually felt like I could have kept going but didn't for a few reasons. First, my heartrate was starting to get a bit high at then end of my runs. Second, that was already a darned big jump in time and distance and I didn't want to overdo it TOO much. Third, I had LOTS to do yesterday and had promised the boys time in the pool too!

I had some heel pain yesterday but I was dressed up so I think it was the shoes adding too it. I had some muscle burning issues in the night, not pain really - just the full awareness of use. :-)

Next weekend I plan to do 6 miles.

Going the wrong way?

I was late getting out of work and thought I was going to have to workout here at home again. Fortunately, ended up getting to the Y but it was feeling rough again. I think my body is rebelling against getting so much exercise after being lazy for so long. I did 4 minutes of running (admittedly at too high of a pace, danged young kid running next to me at 9.5mph!) and my HR was 170!!! So I walked for 2.5 minutes and ran 3, still in the high 160s so I walked 2 or 3 minutes and ran 1.5 and it was STILL high. Then I just started walking 2 and running one. It was consistently 160 or 161 at the end of each run but down to 143 by 2 minutes of walking. I did that 'til I'd been on 40 minutes total and did 5 minutes of cool down. I still ended up doing 2.87 miles in my 45 minutes, so not too bad.

Blah!

Today felt like a hard day. First of all, I was HUNGRY. Not sure why but it was rough. I tried to make good choices, but I know I still ate too much. Second, I was really tired. That's never easy either. I walked for 20 minutes at lunch with J but I can't do that every day. I need at least 2 days a week where I don't walk/run so my legs can recover. Tonight I also did 30 minutes of yoga. I'm really tired now! The good news is I got in at least 70ozs of water today and will probably have a little bit more before I head to bed.

No running

I was just not feeling well today so the boys and I came home at lunchtime. I took it really easy all afternoon but hated the idea of skipping my workout entirely. I know me and I'm not disciplined enough yet to just take a day off. I have a treadmill here that my parents gave me YEARS ago, I mean really, probably 9 years ago. I made Anthony drag it in from the garage last weekend and I finally used it today. It's not as steady as the good ones at the Y, it'll slip under your step sometimes, but all in all it works fine. I'm not comfortable running on it but decided I didn't want to push my luck w/ how I was feeling anyway so I put in a movie and hopped on. I spent 45 minutes walking and did 2.65 miles!

I really need to start keeping track of my miles to see how far I'm getting!

Down some more

I was excited to see a weight loss of 1.2lbs for the week!!! I wasn't sure to expect so this was very good.

I realized though, that in all the weight I gained in the last year or so, I gained A LOT of fat. Pants that fit me last fall at this weight, or even slightly higher, are still way too tight. I don't get that and it's totally depressing. I'm only 11lbs from where I was last year at Christmas and there is no way the pants I bought then will fit in 11 pounds. That part is very frustrating!

Five full weeks.

I have made a point to work out or have some sort of activity at least 3 times a week for 5 weeks now!!!!

I went to the Y this afternoon and this was my first hard workout, as in I just felt like I was dragging and tired. Not sure why. Shelley suggested maybe I hadn't eaten enough in the morning or I hadn't had enough water. Both are definitely possible. Yesterday I didn't drink nearly as much as I have been.

I pushed on despite beging tired. I figured nothing hurt and that was most important. I did my warm up and then 5R 2W 5R 3W 4R 3W 3R and then walked for 15 minutes and then a 5 minute cooldown. I did 3.15 miles in 50 minutes. All in all not bad, especially with all things considered.

My plan now is to do 45 minutes on my Mon/Wed workouts and focus on increasing my time on my Saturday by about 5 minutes each time I'm out. Once my heartrate gets lower with this type of set, I'll fiddle with my run/walk intervals to increase the amount of time I'm running.

Making a change.

I've decided to veer from the C25k program. My body isn't ready to run for that amount of time. Not carrying this much extra weight. I've been reading a book called Marathoning for Mortals and it has several training programs for walk/run combos. I think I'm going to work from that. Today I did this: Walk 5 min, run 6 min, walk 3 min, run 6 min, walk 3 min, run 5 minutes, walk 17 minutes. I covered 2.9 miles in 45 minutes. I think that my goal for now is to get that up to 3-6 minute runs and then eventually up to 8 minutes. OR I'll add another run segment and only walk 2 in between. Not sure yet, but I need to do this one for a few more times and get my heartrate lower while doing it. I'm going to spend the next month focusing on getting up to 4 miles in one hour.

A big week!

Today starts week 5. Today I did three five-minute runs while walking three minutes between each. I did 2.07 miles in 31 minutes. It felt really good. I got a good sweat going, I've never exercised indoors and sweat so much my shirt was wet.

I've decided that my first official run will be in April, rather then May. On April 7th in Tempe I'll be participating in Pat's Run . It's 4.2 miles to support the Pat Tillman Foundation. If you don't know who he is, follow the link at the top of the run page for the foundation. I was a graduate student at ASU when he played there. His decision to turn down a huge NFL contract for military service was huge news here and I respected him so much. It was his death that really brought the reality of the was in Iraq home for me. I felt like I lost somebody I knew and it was heartbreaking.

Yay!!!!

I'm down 10 pounds exactly today!!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! I am very excited. It feels like it's taken forever but SO worth it. Again, I just keep reminding myself that a SLOW weightloss is more likely to stay off.

Another week done!

I finished week 4 today! I am feeling so good about myself!!! I missed my outside run this morning because my youngest was sick last night and woke me up several times. It was too late to get out and be back before my husband had to leave so I went to the Y. Today I did 2.09 miles in 31.5 minutes. I also wore one of those rubbery belts around my belly so I was hot! Next week is even scarier to look at then this week was, check it out.

Workout one:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:
Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

Workout two:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:
Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)
Walk 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)

Workout three:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog two miles (or 20 minutes) with no walking.

Uh...... yikes! The idea of me running for 20 minutes straight is almost surreal! I know I can do it though!!!

Let's talk food!

I didn't train today, not even yoga like I had planned.

My dear friend Shelley has introduced me to the concept of keeping your food in check by making sure no matter what you eat, make sure that no more then 20% of calories come from fat. Shelley has a whole site dedicated to her success in running and weight loss where she gets much more technical and I highly suggest checking it out. http://www.weightlossmommy.com/

She has recipes on there that are darned incredible. Monday I made yummy, chewy chocolate thimbul cookies with raspberry jam! Totally cures that need for something sweet or chocolatey!

Tonight for dinner I made a recipe she'd gotten from another site http://www.low-fat-diet-recipes.com/low-fat-oven-baked-kfc-chicken-recipe.html This one is full of great low fat eating tips too! This chicken is really yummy! I little bit salty for my taste, but I've been cooking pretty low sodium since last summer with Anthony's high cholesteral and blood pressure. All in all, this was a great (and easy) dinner. I paired it with some Idahoan instant loaded mashed potatos. You make them w/ just water and they are totally low fat and so good! They taste like they have sour cream and bacon in there. Can't beat that.

So, does this lowfat stuff work? I mean, the theory is that you can eat as much as you want/need to in order to feel satisfied as long as you keep it below 20% fat.

Well, as of last Sunday I was down 7lbs since Jan. 2. As of this morning I'd lost another 1.4 (in just 3 days) doing this. On top of that, Tuesday was one of those hungry days. You know, the kind where you'll eat anything in sight. I did, or it felt that way, but I made smart choices.

My goal for losing weight is to make changes that I can live with, that don't feel like I'm sacraficing everything I love. I think this could be like that for me. I want to lose weight at a steady but slower pace then I have on previous diets, we all know how successful those have been for me. I want to be down at least 50lbs totaly by the walk in November.

Good workout!

Workout 2 of week 4 is done!!!! It went so well. My legs actually felt better running then when I slowed to my walking pace. I did 2.08 miles in my 31 min 30 seconds so my pace was up a teeny tiny bit. Oh, and my heartrate never got over 168, compared to 172 on Monday, so that is awesome! All in all a good training day.

I need to be thinking about how I'm going to cross train for the 3 day and the half marathon at the same time.

I guess I hadn't talked about my goals here, or at least I don't think so.

I want to run an 8k run in May, do the 3 Day in November and then run the 1/2 marathon in Las Vegas in December. I hope I can figure out how to do long walks and long runs. Should be interesting. I also really need to work in some yoga or something on my non-running day.

Woohooo!!

OMG, I went to the Y this morning and did workout 1 of week 4.

I DID it. In fact, I realized as I hit one minute running and wasn't even winded yet that it's amazing what 9 previous workouts over the course of 3 weeks can do! It did seem like 90 seconds wasn't quite enough walk time but I decided to just go for the whole thing. I got through the 5 minutes and was SOOOO excited! My heartrate ended up in the low 170's by the time I ran my last 5 minutes but really came down ok.

I did 5 minutes of cool down walking at the end so my total time was 31 min 31 seconds and I went 2.02 miles.

Done with week 3!!!

Today was my last workout of week 3. I was nervous going into this week but it went really well! I got up at 6 today and took Cowboy with me. We stuck to the streets since it was still dark and I remembered my cell phone so that was good. There are two great parts about running w/ him. He keeps my walking pace up there, especially the first half, and he's so vigilant that I feel like I can still safely listen to music without somebody sneaking up on me.

I added the extra 90 second set to the end so that I did more then 20 minutes of the run/walk split.

I'm pretty nervous about week 4. It looks like this (from http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:
Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)
Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

I really want to get a heartrate monitor but they're more then I need to spend.

I can't help but be a little bit frustrated. My scale has only gone down about 6lbs in the last 6 weeks but I can see and feel a difference in my clothes, and so can the ladies I work with. I guess that's all that matters, eventually the scale will catch up!

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Yikes!

Wow, today I went to that greenbelt. It didn't occur to me that running in grass would be harder on my legs (stamina wise) then what I'm used to. Monday I had done those an extra 2.5 minutes of both walking and running, but today I just an extra 90 seconds of each. My calves HURT when I was done, but it was a good hurt.

Saturday I'll do my route through the neighborhood.

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Not today...

Well, no formal workout today. I did take the boys to the park and do some good walking and a bit of running with them. I'll go to the Y or the park again tomorrow. I discovered that the park in the next subdivision has a HUGE greenbelt, much bigger then a football field. I could cover some good distance around that thing and be running in grass so it won't be so hard on my legs, feet and knees.

Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Today wasn't a training day, though I do need to start doing something on my off days. I'm thinking yoga.

I took my measurments last night. I'm not sharing them, at least not 'til they've shrunk A LOT. Then maybe I'll post the before and after. ;-) Anyway, I decided I needed to take them. As of this morning I've only lost 6lbs but people have commented that I look like I've lost weight. I actually think it was just the shirt I had on yesterday.

I've got some ideas for fundraising. I want to make some sort of piggy bank for everyone I know to start saving their spare change in. I told my dh that every night he needs to empty his pockets into our jug we keep change in and that will be our donation. If you want in, let me know!

Shelley (Bella Sapone Soaps) is going to donate a set as a prize for me. She's also going to do a special with the scent she has. I think it's going to be called "Love, Hope & Faith" and it smells like LoveSpell from Victoria's Secret. She's going to do it in pink and donate 75% of the profit to my walk!! (Thanks Shelley!!!!!)

I'm also going to look into talking to the principals. I'd like all the schools to try to save 40,000 pennies. I thought I'm make a sign that says, "Every life matters, Every penny counts" and then list some of the statistcs of breast cancer. My only obstacle is that they have a pretty strict "No soliciting" policy. Gotta figure out a way around that.

Monday, February 12, 2007

Getting started!

This Saturday I registered to walk in the Arizona 3 day walk for breast cancer. I'm not sure what has come over me and why I NEED to do this, but I do and I just can't wait! I know part of it is my drive to lose weight and get fit. This gives me something to work toward. I am also just staggered by the breast cancer statistics and the changes that have come in the area of research. Did you know that in the US alone this year, over 175,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer? Worse yet, over 40,000 will die. In the 30 minutes it takes me to type this first post 8 women will be diagnosed and go from living their lives to fighting for them.

Now, thanks to the progress in early detection, there is now a Stage 0 diagnosis with a 100% survival rate. That's incredible!!!

My traning:

Two weeks ago I started a fitness program called the Couch to 5K program - it will transform me from a total couch potato to somebody able to run a 5 k. I should be there by the end of March. From there I plan to continue to train for an 8K run in May. May also marks the beginning of the 24 week training program to prepare me for the 60 miles I'll walk in November.

Today I went to the Y for my workout. I did a 5 minute warm up walk and then started equally timed run/walk bursts. I did 90 seconds, 2.5 minutes, 3 minutes, 90 seconds and 3 minutes - then another 5 minutes walking to cool down. All total I did 2 miles in 33 minutes.

My goal for this journal is to track my training progress and emotion behind this process.
